AI in Design
Use AI whether it is to learn the skill, make your job easier or just do some parts of your job. There is all the hype and talks of AI replacing us, there is some truth to AI doing a lot of jobs, but I wouldn’t say we are at the point where AI is going to “take away our jobs” . This is a gradual shift, in terms of more and more jobs, roles and industries will adopt AI.
Adopting the mindset and starting to learn AI buys designers a lot of time to “ move with the times” in preparing for AI to do some jobs.
Designers can make a start by thinking of all the parts of their job which can be automated for them. As a Design Manager, I know my team of designers need help in the discovery process. This is in a fairly nascent stage in Europe where I live and work. Several companies and designers follow an established discovery process on working together with product managers, but for the most part there is a large gap in this process. The very first step of innovation! So start there. By experimenting with different prompts, we have successfully started to use generative AI in our discovery process in the last quarter.
That gets me thinking. We got “a job done” , irrespective of it being perfect or satisfactory, it was done and gave me and my team a headstart into thinking in the direction of problem solving. A very powerful or useful tool indeed. At this point, it hasn’t taken the designer’s job! Just smoothed a part of the job.
The North Star we would love to move towards is, also mentioned by NN Group, there is a lot of detail and complexity in UI and switching to conversational approach makes the complexity of screens. Gen AI and current chat bots have so much potential to be explored in getting away from complexity to a clean functional interaction.
